The wood is a light brown colour. Inside, the street scene depicts two hotels, a store, bakery and butcher, with trees in the background. Text at the top of the scene reads \"GOLD TOWN\". A single black carry handle is attached to the top of the diorama lid, which can be opened and closed with two metal closures on either side. Inside the flip top lid is two additional scenes, one illustrated, black \u0026 white image of \"Kaniere 1871\" and one painterly depiction of a portion of a gold pan with small faux gold nuggets, a folded map and pickaxe. Compartment behind diorama holds several additional poster-style classroom resources on cardboard, which have been removed and given part numbers. This includes a slip of yellow paper which gives a count of the instructional posters. A small metal plaque on the top of the case identifies the diorama as Auckland Museum School Service resource 184.
