This vessel has a simple pedestal foot with a flattened ring base. A single vertical handle joins the trefoil shaped rim to the shoulder. The entire vessel is black except for two narrow bands of added red which encircle the vessel - one at base of neck, and one below the scene on the body."},{"value":"The scene is located on the side of the body, under the spout, opposite the handle. It is drawn in black paint with added red and incised lines for detail. The scene and its decorative borders fill a rectangle of reserved-red clay coloured ground."},{"value":"The scene is bordered on the vertical sides by three narrow black vertical lines, filled with two columns of black dots. The top border comprises of a strip of descending tongue patterns."},{"value":"The scene has been described as an amazonomachy (Heracles fighting Amazons), and although no white paint remains to indicate the three warriors are female, there is some evidence that the faces and arms had been differentiated. (The convention being to depict female with added white paint, but this seems to be prone to early erosion in many cases). There are three Amazons in the scene, all armed with spears, shields and swords and dressed in plumed helmets, cuirasses and short tunics - some added red is used for detail on these items. Two warriors face outwards, and seem to be running in those directions. They are depicted in profile (head and legs) with the upper torso twisted frontal to the viewer. The centre of the scene is occupied by the battle between a falling Amazon, poised on the toes of a bent left leg with her right leg extended forward. She holds a spear raised in her left hand but it does not point towards her attacker.
